Stockholm Sightseeing

Sweden’s capital spreads out over 14 islands in Lake Malaren and looks out onto the Baltic Sea to the east.
One of the many places you will see on this trip is the Royal Palace, one of the largest palaces in Europe and the official residence of His Majesty the King of Sweden. With over 600 rooms, the Royal Palace of Stockholm is His Majesty the King’s official residence and is the setting for most of the monarchy’s official receptions. Architect Nicodemus Tessin built this baroque style palace in the form of a Roman palace. The castle has more than 600 rooms divided between eleven floors, with a state apartment facing the city and smaller living rooms facing the inner courtyard.
A French prototype influenced Drottningholm Palace; the palace was built by architect Nicodemus Tessin, the Elder, by the commission of Queen Hedvig Eleonora. Several royal personages have since then left their mark on the palace. The Palace is Their Majesties, the King and Queen’s permanent home residence. The rooms in the southern wing of the palace are reserved for this purpose. The rest of the palace and grounds are open to the public year-round.

Marifred & Gripsholm

The small picturesque town of Mariefred has plenty of history and is just over an hour by car from Stockholm. Built around Gripsholm Castle, a fortress in the 14th century, the town took its present form in the 1530s under King Gustav Vasa.
Take time to wander slowly through the many rooms and winding passages of Gripsholm Castle which is filled with over four hundred years of history. See the Swedish State’s collection of portraits – featuring prominent Swedes from the days of Gustav Vasa to present-day musician and composer Benny Andersson. At Gripsholm, you can take a royal stroll around the romantic castle grounds or meet the royal deer at the Hjorthagen nature reserve.
