Why Greenland?
Greenland is the world’s largest island. Glaciers are not an unusual sight in Greenland as most of the country is covered by a massive ice sheet but there are only a few towns where these glaciers are accessible for excursions.
The question becomes, do you want to go by land, by sea or by air? Most visitors to Greenland go with one of these three options. They either drive up to and onto the ice in off-road vehicles at Kangerlussuaq, take helicopters up to the ice from Nuuk or Ilulissat, or sail to the glaciers, which can be done from most towns.
To offer some perspective on how much mass is involved here, just the ‘tip of the icebergs’ can reach 10, 20, 30, or 40 meters above sea level. When chunks of ice calve or break off from such giants, it can create towering waves several meters high. Therefore, boats and kayaks are highly recommended to keep a reasonable distance from large icebergs.
