Today, visitors can travel back in time and, through the possessions of Christian IV and his heirs to get a sense of both everyday life and royal life through 400 years. They were all given their current form by Christian VIII’s queen, Caroline Amalie, who had them redesigned in the 1840s, though many of the stones are much older.

Immortalized as Elsinore in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, Kronborg is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list. With soaring towers, a vast banqueting hall, and damp casemates this fortress was perfectly cast as Hamlet’s Castle. You will see the Royal Chambers, the Councilor’s Hall with the seven tapestries, the church, and the Knight’s Hall. Hans Peder Pederse-Dan’s statue of sleeping folklore hero Holger Danske sits deep down in the underground passages of the castle’s casemates and there he has slept for hundreds of years. Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde
Viking Ship Museum

Roskilde - Viking Museum

The Viking ship museum comprises two main sections – the Viking Ship Hall, where the vessels are kept, and the Boatyard, where archaeological work takes place. The five Viking vessels originate from a blockade approximately 20 km north of Roskilde. They were built during the 11th century as an act of defense against enemy naval attacks on the city, which at that time was the capital. At the Boatyard, the boat-building tradition and culture of the Viking Age are communicated through working boat builders and exhibitions showing the historical background. The boatyard specializes in the reconstruction of prehistoric boats on a full scale. In the Viking Ship Hall, you will be given the unique opportunity to see the impressive "Thoroughbred of the Seas" project, which took the Glendalough Sea Stallion to Dublin and back in 2007–2008. In the Jetty, you can go aboard a merchant vessel filled with goods and warship equipment for battle. You can dress up like a Viking and let your imagination take you back to the Viking times. Land of legends in Lejre
Sagnlandet

Lejre - Land of legends

Land of Legends in Lejre is waiting to be explored! Spread across 106-acres, Land of Legends is an archaeological open-air museum in the Lejre Municipality, a few kilometers west of Roskilde. It comprises reconstructions of an Iron Age village and sacrificial bog (200 BC to 200 AD), a Viking marketplace (900 AD), a Stone Age campsite (5000 BC), an 18th-century farmstead, and various grave monuments. It is here in Lejre, according to medieval chronicles and sagas, that the story of the kingdom of Denmark began. During AD 600–950, a family known as the Scyldings ruled from their seat in Lejre with the famous and legendary kings Skjold, Roar, Frode, and Rolf Krake. These sagas should, naturally, be taken with caution but the archaeological excavations in the area during the last 30 years have shown that they do have some basis in fact and can be connected to material remains at the site, placing Lejre amongst the most critical locations of the Viking period.

Today, the mine has become a sculpture museum, with sculptures of gypsum created by Anders Bundgaard, bronze sculptures by Carl Johan Bonnesen, and a relief cut into the limestone wall by Søren Assenholt. Different temporary exhibitions can also be experienced inside the mines. The atmosphere created by the lofty cave-like mine adds to the slightly eerie experience of walking among the sculptures.
